Editing a club night: three cameras, the desk and a whole night

A club night is six hours of footage per camera, a drop every three minutes and a client who wants the video within the week. This is the method we use, from the recording to the clips.

Riccardo Tirincanti, SemSync, 2026-09-14

Before the night: what to record

The desk audio, always: a line from the mixer to a recorder or a camera, for the whole night. It is the reference for everything. Fixed cameras on tripods record continuously; handheld cameras shoot one or two minute clips, and that is fine.

No timecode is needed and no slate. Every camera needs its own microphone on, however ugly: that is what is used to line it up.

The folders

One folder for the night. Inside: MIXER with the audio, CAM1, CAM2, CAM3 with the fixed cameras, MOBILE with the handheld clips. SemSync reads this structure and works out by itself who is fixed and who moves; since 11.6 it also looks at the pictures and works out who frames the DJ, the room or the crowd.

The edit in time with the music

SemSync hears the drops, the builds and the energy changes in the desk audio and cuts there: the wide camera on the drop, the handheld cameras between drops, the crowd on the roar. Out comes a rough cut already cut, with markers on the drops, inside Resolve or Premiere. From there you touch up, you do not start over.

The clips for the venue and the DJ: the highlights come out as loose clips, horizontal and vertical, ready for social. And the night report, with your logo, to hand to the venue.

Questions

The things everyone asks.

How many cameras does it handle?

There is no fixed limit: real nights so far go from three to eighteen sources.

Can I change the cutting style?

Yes: club, festival, frantic, or your own rules one by one. And it learns from how you correct.

Does it work with Premiere too?

Yes: inside Premiere Pro there is the SemSync panel and the timeline goes into the open project.
